I was raised by a white family in Lincoln, Nebraska. My parents loved me. That part was never a question. And there were still things I needed that they didn't know to give me, not because they were bad parents, but because nobody told them. Nobody sat down with them and walked them through what was coming, what to say, how their son was going to move through a world that didn't see him the way they did.
I didn't find out what I was missing until I was 49 years old and met my biological family for the first time. I finally understood the gap I'd been living with my whole life.
